Ms. Abdulhadi sees herself as a multiculturalist, pointing to the words of Edward Said: “I’m very pleased to register myself under the banner of multiculturalism. . . as a way to work with others who are jammed together with me on a tiny territory- to bring it now to Palestine and Israel- who so far have managed to survive by denying the full historical and political existence of the other. . . I think multiculturalism can be consonant with ideals of emancipation and enlightenment if it’s applied to concrete situations in which people of different cultures have not been able to live together peacefully, but in my opinion can.”
