Letter from State Department to PFP (Page 1)
This letter was sent to Michael Brown, Executive Director of Partners for Peace, in response to his request for the latest information on American citizens being detained by Israel. PFP received it on Monday, June 7, 2004.
The letter is not as forthcoming as a May 2003 letter from the Department of State that listed specific charges and sentencing lengths against American citizens. As a result, PFP is unable to determine what happened to one American arrested on 10 June 2002 and charged with “illegal membership in illegal student union.” The sentence of 19 months has elapsed, but this document from State does not enable us to compare this case with previously available information. The same holds for other individuals charged with “Pal. National Activities” and “involvement in illegal organizations.” This was precious little information on which to proceed, but it was a start. But now, even this scant information is no longer being made available.
The secrecy of the United States government where the well-being of American citizens is at stake has become deeply troubling.
